PPA 100 with loads of Blog Candy!!!

This is a very special week for us at the PPA, we are celebrating our 100th Challenge with Blog Candy.  Playing at PPA this week is also your entry to win an amazing jackpot of blog candy - something from every member of the Design Team!  Show us your favorite technique this week and you could be the winner.  Be sure to check out the DT’s blogs for their blog candy offering.

Our Challenge today is to use your favorite technique.  I chose coloring and embroidery today.  My favorite technique depends on the mood I’m in.  I actually had a hard time deciding what I wanted to do for the 100th PPA Challenge.

PPA 100, Embroidery and Flowers, Carla's Scraps (2)

Using the new Hostess DSP, Cheerful Treat I created this card.  There are so many gorgeous colors in this DSP, I just love it.  Below you can see the close up of the embroidery.

Using a stick pin, I just went around the vine and into the center of the flowers and poked a hole.  I did the running stitch on the vine and added French Knots to the flowers and to some of the random dots along the edge.  I just love running my fingers over this image with the dimension the embroidery gives.

Punched Envelope Flap Tutorial

Have ya seen those fancy Martha ads with the scalloped edges on her envelope flaps?  Well, here’s how ya make them.  You will need Martha’s Score Board or an Envelope Making Template.

Punched Envelope Flaps, Carla's Scraps (3)

Using Martha’s Score Board and the envelope template.  Its located underneath your board.  Cut your cardstock to the dimensions shown on the template per your card size.  Mine is for an A-2 card and is equal to the Medium SU Envelope.

Position your envelope triangle template in the upper left and line your paper as shown in the photo below... and follow the directions in the photo.  You will score down from the little arrow on the triangle.

Punched Envelope Flap Tutorial, Carla's Scraps

Punched Envelope Flap Tutorial, Carla's Scraps (26)

Cut out all 4 corners, be sure to cut along the outside of each score line.  It won’t fold correctly if you cut down the center of the score lines or if any of the score is showing.  You can see on my cut outs in the next picture that the score line is cut out.

Using your Scallop Trim Corner Punch line up the top of the flap and punch.

Punched Envelope Flap Tutorial, Carla's Scraps (17)

As shown above, line up your Scallop Border Punch and punch across both sides.

Trim off little edges on each corner of flap to match punch.  Be careful with the last punch along the edge so you don’t go into the side flap.

For the liner, cut a square 3 7/8 by 3 7/8 (or 3 3/4 square works well too) and score thru the center, point to point and place in envelope.  Tack in place with a little double sided adhesive or a mini dot at the top.   It doesn’t take much adhesive to hold it in place.  The white space is for your adhesive or lick n stick glue.  You can purchase lick n stick glue or you can use the recipe at the end of this post.  Double sided adhesive is fine too.

The following photo’s are equal to SU Envelope Sizes...

ENVELOPE GLUE RECIPE #1 - Licky Sticky Glue from Karen Craig: Ingredients:
1 tsp. Elmer's Glue
1/2 tsp. vinegar
2 drops mint flavoring or flavoring of your choice
Mix well and paint on white space of envelope flap.  Let Dry.  Store extra glue in well sealed container.  You can fill a dauber bottle with water so you don’t have to actually lick it.

You can use any brand combination Border – Corner Punch Sets.  Shown in my photos are Martha Stewart and SU Scallop Edge Border and Corner Punch.  I don’t know if Scor-Pal offers the Envelope Triangle Piece or not.  You might want to check that if you already have a Scor-Pal.  Punched Envelope Flaps, Carla's Scraps (2)

Aren’t they beautiful envelopes?  I just love them and have dozens made, just need to line them when I use them.  Now I want all the matching border and corner punches.   Shhhh don’t tell Steve.         Enjoy...

Edited to add:  Vicki emailed me and ask about putting these in the mail or if I just hand deliver these...

When I mail mine, I always add 24 cents extra postage to my envelope and write “please hand cancel” next to the postage.  I don’t know if they actually hand canceled it or not.  My scallops laid flat to my envelope with no problems going thru the mail.    Be sure to add Snail or Red Line (Sticky Strip or Scor-Pal tape really well to your blank area between the scallops and the liner and it should be just fine.  I mailed one to myself and it came thru just fine.  I always said I was going to mail myself one of my cards.   lol  Mom thought I’d went nuts.  lol

If you use the above glue recipe just be sure to add some to your scallops for safety if your unsure.

Break-Away Tuesday...

I decided to take a break from SU and create a card with some other goodies that I’ve been wanting to use.

I have recently fallen in love with Mulberry Flowers and I thought they made the perfect addition to my Inkadinkado Bird.  Kinda classed him up a bit.

Colorful Bird, Mulberry Flowers, Marianne Designables - Dots, Carla's Scraps

My bird is colored in with SU markers... Marina Mist, Daffodil Delight, Always Artichoke and Tangerine Tango.  I placed all the flowers, then the leaves, then the vines and the little scrolls of quilling.

Colorful Bird, Mulberry Flowers, Marianne Designables - Dots, Carla's Scraps (2)

I added the tiny Basic Pearls for the flower centers and of course the Silver “halfbacks” as Linda Fisher calls them.  I thought of her when I added them.  I just love the way she uses them on her cards, especially the silver ones.

The white scalloped, polka dot layer is a Marianne Design Designables Punch and Emboss – Dots.

Supplies...Colorful Bird, Mulberry Flowers, Marianne Designables - Dots, Carla's Scraps

  • Inkadinkado Bird on a Branch
  • Daffodil Delight DSP
  • White Cardstock
  • Old Olive, Marina Mist, Tangerine Tango Textured Cardstock
  • Circle Nestibilities
  • Blossom Petals Punch for the leaves
  • Spring Bouquet Punch for lil 5 Petal Flowers Retired
  • Marianne Design Designables - Punch and Emboss Dots
  • Basic Pearls and Silver Half-Backs

I hope you enjoyed my card today.  My neck seems better and believe me I am sooooo tickled.  I was beginning to think it was something I was going to have to live with or have surgery on.  Since the new meds each day has been a bit better than the last.

It’s a Sketch Challenge at the PPA

Its another fabulous Margaret Moody Sketch Challenge at the PPA this week.  I chose to do a monochromatic card in one of the new 2011-2013 In Colors, Wisteria WonderPPA 98, Sketch, Wisteria Wonder, Delicate Doilies, Fabulous Florets, Carla's Scraps (3)

I used the new Flirtations DSP that will be available July 1st.  This card is for my Mom’s birthday, she turns 75 on June 30th.  Mom has crocheted doilies since I can remember and taught me how to my Freshman year of high school.  I’d still be making doilies, between cards of course, if it weren’t for the 12 little ones... they kinda like those balls of thread.

Here’s the side view so you can see how I popped the flowers a bit with dimensionals.PPA 98, Sketch, Wisteria Wonder, Delicate Doilies, Fabulous Florets, Carla's Scraps (4)

To create the background for the flowers, I stamped the solid image from Fabulous Florets twice and cut out all pieces to layer.  I then stamped the flowers and leaves in the same color (Wisteria Wonder) and snipped them out and layered them on with a pop dots.

Here’s the inside... I just had to use the new Lace Ribbon Border Punch, available July 1.  I might just add an extra flower from the front that I didn’t use.PPA 98, Sketch, Wisteria Wonder, Delicate Doilies, Fabulous Florets, Carla's Scraps (2)

I hope you enjoyed my card today and that you’ll play at the PPA this week.  Thank you all so much for the wonderful comments last week, I so appreciate them.  By the time you read this, I will have another Doctor appointment scheduled, so we’ll see what they say this time.

Supplies used...PPA 98, Sketch, Wisteria Wonder, Delicate Doilies, Fabulous Florets, Carla's Scraps (3)

  • Flirtations DSP  Sneak Peek
  • Wisteria Wonder Textured Cardstock

What's your Signature Style? + a Looped Flower Tutorial

Our PPA Challenge this week is to create a card in Your Signature StyleWhats Your Signature Syle PPA 97

Since my favorites are monochromatic cards and flowers, I thought I’d better create that for today’s PPA Challenge.  The only thing was, it was supposed to be in purples... somehow it turned out to be Baja Breeze.    But with the new gorgeous purple coming in the new IBC, I’m happy to wait.

Signature Style, 3-D Daisy, PPA 97, Carla's Scraps (9)

I fell in love with this easy to make flower.  You can make it any size you’d like and as many layers as you like.  I found it in April’s Scrapbooks Etc magazine.

Signature Style, 3-D Daisy, PPA 97, Carla's Scraps (10)

the inside...

Basic Card Supplies...

  • Strength and Hope Stamp Set
  • Sincere Salutations Stamp Set
  • Elegant Soiree DSP (Flower)
  • Elegant Bouquet Embossing Folder
  • Basic Pearls
  • Baja Breeze Classic Ink Pad
  • Punches
    • 1 3/8 Circle for Sentiment
    • 1 1/4 Circle for Sentiment
    • Scallop Oval for Inside Sentiment
    • XL Oval for Inside Sentiment

Looped Flower Tutorial... Signature Style, 3-D Daisy, PPA 97, Carla's Scraps (8)

6 X 3 pc DSP  layer 1
6 X 4 pc DSP  layer 2
1/8” Double Sided Tape
Pencil to soften and roll DSP over
Paper Trimmer and Bone Folder

Note: tutorial shown in Retired DSP.

Looped FlowerTutorial, Carla's Scraps, PPA 97 (2)

Cut, roll your DSP around your pencil to soften enough so it rolls up a bit like in step 2 of the picture.  Add your 1/8 double stick tape to the 6” long edge and secure to the other edge.  It will resemble a paper towel tube...  You will do both pieces of DSP this way.

3D Daisy Tutorial, Carla's Scraps, PPA 97 (5)

Using your bone folder, flatten both at the seam and then along the other edge, you are folding flat.  Punch your flower center out with a 1/2” Circle Punch.  Your flower center can be any size you like...

3D Daisy Tutorial, Carla's Scraps, PPA 97 (6)

Using your paper trimmer, slice about 8 (you might use 6, 7, 8 or 9 it just depends) from the 6 X 3 piece in 1/8” strips of the tube.  Now, pinch both folded ends together to open each slice into a petal.  On the backside of your flower center add Tomboy Multi Purpose Adhesive...

3D Daisy Tutorial, Carla's Scraps, PPA 97 (8)

(note: in photo above, 8 slices just depends.  I only used 6 of mine for each layer.)

Adhere the flower petals from the 6 X 3 DSP to the backside of your flower center, touching each petal in the center and keeping the seam hidden by the flower center...

Loopy Flower Tutorial, Carla's Scraps, PPA 97 (5)

For layer 2, you will use a smaller center so it hides behind the first flower center and you will want to here adhere it in the middle of the 1st flower center on top of the 1st layer of petals.  Clear as mud, right?  Okay... reread it, it’s right.

3D Daisy Tutorial, Carla's Scraps, PPA 97 (10)

In the next photo, you can see how the smaller flower center sits and that the 2nd layer of petals are adhered between the first layer and are from the 6 X 4 pc of DSP.

Remember the 2nd layer of petals is actually the bottom of the flower when you are done.  Your shorter layer goes on first, it goes on the backside of the flower center you want to see.

3D Daisy Tutorial, Carla's Scraps, PPA 97 (13)

Now, turn over your flower and your done except for embellishing the center.  I used the Basic Pearls in graduated sizes.

Personal Note to all:

I really want to say thank you for sticking with me while I get over this neck thing.  I don’t know if the antibiotics are working or not... some days yes and some days no.  Today is a good day.  I know I owe a lot of you a reply to your email.   I am so far behind and so totally embarrassed by it.   Since this all started I only have 3 cards created that you haven’t seen.  That’s sad!!!  It seems if I’m not working, I’m napping with the cats.

But, I do have 2 new things to share... 1.  I have a new job!!!  Yep, I quit Michaels to go to work for Lynne at our local Scrapbook Store, Scrap-a-doodle.  I start training this month and will be working there part-time evenings beginning in July.  I am so excited and looking forward to working with Lynne and her Doodle Crew.  If you ever in the Peoria, IL area, ask anyone where the Metro Center is and you’ll find me.
2.  I bought the Silhouette Studio Electronic Cutter.  It is sooooo cool.  I absolutely love it.  It’s the one where you purchase individual images.  You can cut, print and design.  I’ve only cut out a fern so far, but I love it!!!!  Plus it tells you the exact dimensions when you are re-sizing... how cool is that.    Plus I got it for 169.00 and free shipping.  That’s the only way to go.

PPA Celebrity Color Challenge + Adding Dimension to your Flowers and Leaves

Don't let these lovely ladies fool you!
CherryMustardNight

The PPA is having a Color Challenge this week - but with a masculine twist.  Tanya Phillips joins the design team as featured designer. It's a great week to create a Father's Day card or a birthday card for a special guy!

Oops, here I go  with a feminine card... I skimmed my notes instead of reading them.  Do  you ever do that?  It says right on there Masculine.  I know, I’ll give it to Steve for Fathers Day, he needs flowers, might do him some good.

PPA 96, Punch Art Flowers, Flowers, Scallop Trim Border Punch, Carla's Scraps,

Had I of read my PPA notes I would of created a card using Countryside.  I just love that truck and the truck would have been Cherry Cobbler Red.  But for now I have to tell you about this card.

PPA 96, Punch Art Flowers, Flowers, Scallop Trim Border Punch, Carla's Scraps, (2)

To get lots of dimension into my flowers, I used my largest size ball on my Stylus and starting with the back side of the flower I rub the stylus over the cardstock, breaking down the fibers.  Be sure to do this on a pc of foam or and old mouse pad.  I then turn the flower over to the front side and with a circular motion with my stylus ball, I do just the center (see black dot in photo below) and then I push straight down with stylus into the flower center into the foam and the flower will pop up a bit more.  Putting Dimension into your flowers, Carla's Scraps, PPA 96 (3)

I then layered 2 flowers of the same size and then added a little one punched from the retired Spring Blossom Punch, which should of never been retired.  *smile*  I love that punch!

Here’s how I quickly added the veins and dimension to my leaves...Adding Leaf Veining the easy way, Carla's Scraps, PPA 96 (4)

After you fold in half, be sure to fold the 3 sections, straight up!

Adding Leaf Veining the easy way, Carla's Scraps, PPA 96 (3)

Its so easy!!!!  Doesn’t take but a second and no more adding them in with the stylus.  See the dimension you get just from folding.... amazing.  Plus I didn’t break down the fibers first with they stylus as I did with the flowers.

My supplies today...PPA 96, Punch Art Flowers, Flowers, Scallop Trim Border Punch, Carla's Scraps,

  • 5 Petal Punch
  • Spring Blossom Punch Retired
  • Basic Pearl Centers
  • Leaves:
    • 2 Step Owl Punch
    • Blossom Petals Punch

Neck update.... I had my appointment with my new doctor.  I am on mega doses of an antibiotic.  I go back in 10 days and if its better, we will stay on the same treatment until the infection or whatever it is, is gone.  He didn’t say exactly what I had, but the antibiotic I was on 2 weeks ago for a sinus infection and a head cold really helped, but after the pills were gone the pain and stiffness was back.

I hope you enjoyed my Masculine card  *smile*  I will read the next weeks challenge instead of skimming.  Plus last week, I used the wrong inspiration photo... did ya notice.  It seems everything has just gone downhill for me lately.  I hope yours is all uphill !!!
